How are multiple DUIs punished?
Punishments for a DUI conviction in California can vary depending on the
circumstances of your case.
In general, penalties are as follows:
-
Second DUI: 10 days to a year in jail, up to $1,800 in fines, and 2 years license
suspension
-
Third DUI: 120 days to a year in jail, up to $1,800 in fines, and 3 years suspension
-
Fourth or felony DUI: 16 months in jail, up to $18,000, and 4 year license suspension
In addition, you will be forced to pay to have an ignition interlock device
(IID) installed in your car after your second DUI conviction. An IID requires
a breath sample free of alcohol for your engine to even start and requires
further samples while your car is in operation.
